Hello everyone! This is Sofia Kabigting and today I present to you my very first post here in WordPress. Every thing has its own beauty and unique characteristics, even the very system of words we speak, “Language”. There are some words often used by people of all ages and there are words that not all maybe be familiar with. Here are some Filipino words with their English definitions and usage that may or not be uncommon to everyone.
Uncommon Filipino Words
1. Pantablay = Charger
Definition: A device that restores energy to an exhausted battery.(http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/charger)
Pwede makigamit ng pantablay?
Can I use your charger?
2. Miktinig = Microphone
Definition:: A device used by people to record and make their voice louder.
Gumamit ka ng miktinig upang marinig nila ang iyong boses.
Use a microphone so that they can hear your voice.
3. Haynayan = Biology
Definition: Scientific study of the living.
Siya ay bihasa sa Haynayan.
She’s an expert in Biology.
4. Bato-balani = Magnet
Definition: Something or someone that attracts.
Gumamit ka ng bato-balani, baka makita mo yung hinahanap mo.
Use a magnet, maybe you can find what you’re looking for.
5. Sipnayan = Mathematics
Definition: The science of numbers, quantities, and shapes and the relations between them. (http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/mathematics)
Siya ang hindi gaanong bihasa sa Sipnayan.
He’s not that skilled in Mathematics.
6. Dayang = Queen/Princess/Noble Lady
Definition: A woman highly respected or well-known within a field.
Isa siyang kagalang-galang na dayang.
She is one respectable Queen.
7. Pang-ulong hatinig = Headphone
Definition: A pair of earphones connected by a band and worn on the head.
Pwede po bang pakikuha ng aking pang-ulong hatinig?
Can you please pass over my headphones?
8. Salipawpaw = Airplane
Definition: A vehicle with wings and an engine that flies through the air .
Sasakay tayo ng salipawpaw papuntang Pilipinas.
We will ride an airplane going to the Philippines.
9. Sulatroniko = Email
Definition: Messages sent electronically from one computer to another.
Natanggap mo ba ang ipinadala kong sulatroniko sa iyo?
Did you receive the email I sent you?
10. Kinaadman = Knowledge/Wisdom
Definition: information, understanding, or skill that you get from experience or education (http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/knowledge)
Ang dami kong nalalaman na maidadag-dag ko sa aking kinaadman.
I learned so many things that I can add to my knowledge.
11. Hatinig = Telephone
Definition: A device which uses wires and radio signals to send sounds over long distances
Mayroon tumatawag para sa iyo sa hatinig.
Someone’s calling for you over the telephone.
